What Are Dental Implants?  The Best Treatment Option for Missing Teeth

Dental implants are strong titanium posts that are surgically inserted into your jawbone where natural teeth are missing. The titanium dental implants act as artificial tooth roots to which lifelike crowns, bridges, and dentures can be attached.

Dentistry professionals consider implants to be the best way to replace missing teeth because they provide support to the jawbone, prevent bone recession, and keep restorations like dentures securely in place.

Benefits of Dental Implants Why They're a Gold Standard for Tooth Replacement

Restore Smile Form and Function

After placing your implants, Dr. Saccoh will attach a lifelike dental restoration. This dental restoration is designed to renew your smile and boost your confidence. It can also make it easier to eat healthy foods like crunchy fruits and veggies.

Improve Bone Health

When natural teeth are missing, your jawbone can shrink and weaken. This can give your face a shrunken appearance. Implants encourage strong bone growth, and the attached restorations can make your face look full and healthy.

Long-Lasting Investment

If you maintain good oral hygiene and visit the dentist regularly, dental implants placed by Dr. Saccoh at his state-of-the-art Joppa, MD, dental practice can last for decades.

Bone Grafting Before Implants Preparing Your Jawbone for Successful Dental Implant Surgery

3D illustration of bone grafting

Tooth loss can lead to bone loss in the jaw. This is because the bone structure no longer receives stimulation from the lost tooth root. As the bone atrophies around the tooth gap, the jawbone deteriorates.

For patients with extensive bone loss in the upper or lower jaw, bone grafting will need to be performed. Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that improves bone density. This can be achieved through the use of donor bone tissue or artificial hard-tissue grafts. Some patients may need a sinus lift, a type of bone graft procedure that rebuilds density in the upper jaw near the sinuses.

Dr. Saccoh can determine if you need bone grafting before you have implants placed. Patients with extensive tooth loss may be able to avoid bone grafting with the All-on-4 technique, which maximizes the available bone tissue. If bone grafting is necessary in your case, Dr. Saccoh will walk you through the treatment process and let you know how the preparatory procedure will impact the overall implant treatment timeline.

The Two Common Fears That People Face at the Dentist's Office We Help Our Patients Avoid Discomfort and Receive Budget-Friendly Dental Implants

Dr. Saccoh knows that dental patients worry about pain and their pocket books. Thanks to sedation methods and modern pain management at our Joppa dental office, there's very little discomfort during the implant process. Similarly, financing options and our in-house payment plans help patients avoid a major dental bill upfront. Instead, they can stretch things out with affordable monthly payments that won't strain household finances.

How Dental Implants Are Placed Get a Sense of the Implant Placement Process

Curious about the dental implant procedure? Here's what implant placement, abutment attachment, and restoration placement look like. Your dentist will surgically insert the titanium implant directly into your jaw. An abutment is then placed before your custom dental crown, bridge, or denture is attached to the implant post.

The Dental Implant Procedure What Patients Can Expect at Each Step

Prior to your implant surgery appointment, you will undergo a comprehensive oral exam at our greater Baltimore, MD, dental practice. Dr. Saccoh will use a 3D cone beam digital scanner to create a precise, customized implant placement plan based on your smile and oral health goals.

The dental implant process takes several months and two oral surgeries to complete. Once you've healed, you can experience a complete smile.
The dental implant process takes several months and two oral surgeries to complete. Once you've healed, you can experience a complete smile.

1st Appointment

After numbing anesthetic and (if needed) relaxing sedation are administered, Dr. Saccoh will make small incisions in your gums, through which the dental implants will be inserted into your jawbone.

Osseointegration

Over the next four to six months, your jawbone will heal and fuse to the implants, securely anchoring them in place.

2nd Appointment

Dr. Saccoh will attach connectors called abutments to the implants. This requires a second surgery. Calming oral sedation is available if you feel anxious.

Healing Period

Your gums will now heal around the abutments. This should take around two weeks.

3rd Appointment

Dr. Saccoh can now attach custom-built crowns, bridges, or dentures to your implants. It's time to show off your new smile.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

Q. Is implant recovery painful?

A. It is normal to experience some discomfort the first few days following implant placement. However, over-the-counter pain medications, a soft diet to reduce irritation, and ice packs to reduce swelling should help ease the pain. Your dentist may also prescribe pain medications to help as well. We will provide you with all the information you need to make recovery as easy as possible. If you experience any troubling symptoms or pain that is not easily managed at home, please contact our Joppa dental practice so we can address your concerns promptly.

Q. How long do implants last?

A. The implant and abutment used to secure your restoration to the implant are made of durable titanium. With proper care and maintenance, they are designed to last a lifetime. Your custom denture, crown, or bridge can last 15 years or more. However, that restoration will wear over time and eventually need to be replaced.

Q. How do I care for my implant and restoration?

A. Your restoration will be secured to the implant so you will treat your new smile just like you would your natural teeth. Practice good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily and flossing at least once a day. It is also important to continue your regular dental exams and cleanings to ensure your new smile lasts for years to come.

Q. I have some oral health issues that disqualify me from implant treatment. Can you help me?

A. Yes. We offer comprehensive treatment options to restore your oral health and help you qualify for dental implant treatment. If you need a bone graft or sinus lift to qualify for implants, Dr. Saccoh can refer you to a trusted oral surgeon in the greater Baltimore area for treatment.

Q. What is an abutment?

A. An abutment is a piece that is attached to the implant. The abutment allows your dentist to secure your custom crown, bridge, or denture to the dental implants.

Q. Does dental insurance cover dental implants?

A. Dental insurance often does not cover dental implants. However, your insurance plan may cover other portions of your implant treatment, such as the restoration or preparatory treatments you may need. We will verify your coverage before your treatment begins to maximize your benefits and help you accurately plan and budget.

Q. Will people be able to tell I have dental implants?

A. No. Once your restoration is placed, you will not be able to see the dental implant or abutment. Your new smile will look, feel, and function just like natural teeth, so others will not be able to tell you have implants.
