Dental crown is a shell that goes over a tooth. It involves, like, preparing the tooth so we don't make it bigger than it was. So if the crown, for example, is going to be 1-millimeter thick, then we'll take 1 millimeter of tooth structure all around so when it goes over the tooth, the tooth is still the same width and height. It's there to protect the tooth. We use it for broken teeth, chipped teeth, or, I mean, cracked teeth. Anybody with a chewing tooth that's potentially weak is a candidate for a dental crown. That includes people, like, if you just have a root canal on a chewing tooth wherein that tooth is weaker than it was, we need to protect you with the dental crown, or maybe you bitten something hard and you broke part of your tooth, you're a candidate for dental crown.
Depending on the diet, different people . . . I mean, you have some people that grind their teeth during the day, at night, they use significantly forces. So those people tend to break their natural teeth. If you're breaking the natural teeth with that you'll break the dental crown. And you have some people on a normal diet, on a healthy individual, it's normal diet, the dental crown should last as long as they have their teeth.
There's no extra care needed for dental crowns. You treat them just like your normal teeth, including flossing, brushing, and what you eat. You can walk in and walk out in one hour or less, and your treatment is completed. It's not like it used to be where you used to wait two weeks, wait for the lab, get that gooey impression material. Now, we just prepare the teeth to scan it with a little camera, and then we make it right there on the spot. So in about half-hour, 45 minutes, you're done and can go back to your normal daily life.
